Our General Committee Meetings 18^th March 2022, 15^th April 2022 and 20^th May 2022 were postponed due to Covid 19 Pandemic.
However, 2022 has been a successful year for the Society.

WNDHS Celebrates 30 Years

The Foundation Meeting of Walpole Nornalup and District Historical Society Inc. was held in Pioneer Cottage, Walpole 12^th March 1992. Much has been achieved over the past 30 years, by many very dedicated people – hours of research and compiling history of the area and we say a big thank you to them all.

Walpole Museum

Progress has been made in regard to the Walpole Museum. A Walpole Town Hall Proposed Site Plan for the Museum, that is, two Shannon Sheds back-to-back, have been drawn up. View, Walpole Town Hall Proposed Site Plan on display today at the AGM.

Website

We have had a number of enquiries regarding local history which we have been able to forward on. Includes – ‘Skippy Rock’ Nornalup Inlet, Jesmond Dene Resort Nornalup, Allen Family History Walpole,  Jack Rate Forestry Dept Walpole, Arthur and Molly Ross Nornalup, ‘Spiccy Log’ Conspicuous Beach story ‘Lights Beach Log’ Denmark, Area of  MEHNIUP information requested. Harold updates the website regularly and it continues to be of great interest. Keep up to date with WNDHS – wndhs.org.au.

Donated Items of Historic Interest

Varied items of historic interest continue to be donated to the Society including:

• 3 x Grid Maps – Nelson Land District – Frankland 1986, Broke Inlet 1986 and Walpole 1987. Prepared by Mapping Branch Dept of Conservation and Land Management c.1980’s. Donated via WCRC late 2021.
•  Metal Tool Box, tool box belonged to Wilfred Hope Bristow (he was known as Claude), Claude Bristow joined the workforce of Smith’s Bow Bridge Sawmill when it reopened in 1946;
• 5 x books and 3 x photographs, Smith’s Bow Bridge Sawmill c.1939. Donated by Molly Smith late 2021.
• ‘Skippy Rock’ Written history and one photograph. Donated by Gary Muir.
• Journal – The Great Circle (Vol 43 No1 2021) Includes In the Wake of Steam Tug “Escort” by Heather Campbell and published by the Australian Association for Marine History. Donated by Harold Luxton.
• ‘Life Story’ A story of Group Settlement life. By I.M. Russell. Donated by Ivy Russell via Liz Willemsen.
•  Antique Portable Organ. The portable organ was in storage at the Anglican Church in Denmark, approval was given by the Trustees of the Anglican Diocese of Bunbury for the organ to be donated to WNDHS 30^th June 2022.

Dennis Gilpin and Family Hazelvale Visit

Monday 21^st February 2022 committee members joined Dennis Gilpin his brother Robin and sister Ruth to view Group 138 School site Hazelvale and Mission House site Hazelvale. An interesting and enjoyable excursion.

Pascoe Family Tribute 20^th August 2022  ()

Celebrating the history of original Group 116 settlers Thomas and Elizabeth Pascoe and their family, by erecting memorial plaques in their honour, and remembering Winifred Alice Pascoe (nee Clarke), Pascoe Road Bow Bridge.

Royal Western Australian Historical Society 57^th Annual State Conference of Affiliated Societies

hosted by Denmark Historical Society Denmark WA September 9^th – 11^th. On Saturday 10^th Sept 2 pm – Out and About – Group Settlement Experience, was held at the Tingledale Hall. WNDHS provided displays of local history for this successful event.

Book Sales ()

Book sales over the past year have been pleasing. We are in the process of working on other titles and they will be available for sale soon.

Walpolian Newsletter

Four issues per year, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring sent to members   Walpolian also to the Royal Western Australian Historical Society in Perth, State Library in Perth and Denmark Historical Society. We receive History West from RWAHS monthly and Koorabup from Denmark Historical Society quarterly.

Homestead Inventory 2022

A requirement by Walpole Community Resource Centre. An updated Inventory of the Homestead contents was forwarded to Cherie Smith WCRC 6^th July 2022.

WNDHS Insurance Requirement

Certificate of Insurance with Rainbow Coast Insurance Brokers, Albany. Renewal was 14^th June 2022.

Library Displays

Library displays are ongoing; Society arranges displays of local historical interest for our community and visitors to enjoy.

Fundraising

Again our sincere thanks go to Helen and Ian Gallash who generously provide popular homemade Jams, Pickles and Chutneys, on sale at Walpole Community Resource Centre. We thank Walpole CRC for their continued assistance with sales.

Elizabeth Gerner

With great sadness the Society farewells Foundation Member/Committee Member/Life Member and friend Elizabeth Gerner. Elizabeth passed away October 2022. A valued member who contributed so much to the Society over many years. She will be remembered.
